The Nicht Afore Christmas - picture book
“Twis the Nicht afore Yule Day, when aa through the hoose
No a craitur wis steerin, no een a moose”
Full colour book featuring the well known nineteenth-century poem, ‘The Night Before Christmas’, fully translated into Scots language by Irene McFarlane. Her beautiful translation is playful and fun, matching the full colour illustrations. They are all hand-drawn pencil illustrations by Rosemary Cunningham, richly coloured with inks to evoke Christmas in one particular Glasgow Tenement.
Commissioned and published by Perth based Tippermuir Books, the book received a Scots Language Publication Grant in 2020. Set in Glasgow, the National Trust for Scotland’s Tenement House Museum is the inspiration for this book’s festive home. The green tiled fireplace in the story is particularly recognisable! Children and grown ups will all enjoy welcoming a little more Scots language and Glaswegian heart into Yuletide this year.
There’s a downloadable glossary here if you’re stuck on any of the Scots words!
Size: 220 x 275mm, portrait orientation.
